Capitalizing on their late American bid to Nationals, 14 Black has returned home with a hard fought 11th place finish at the national tournament in Reno, Nevada. Pool play opened on Thursday, June 24 with 3 matches followed by two more the next day. Highlights of pool play included an opening 3 set win over Olympia RoShamBo. After losing the first set in which they seemed to forget to breathe, 14 Black stormed back with a 25-9 win in the second set. They continued their stellar play in the third set winning 15-11.

Their second match was against the number one seed, Colorado Performance. 14 Black came out of the blocks swinging and when the dust settled had earned a 25-14 win in the first set. Unfortunately Performance was not going to go quietly, coming back to win the second set, 25-18. In the third set 14 Black fought back from three points down at 5-8 to take an 11-10 lead. Unfortunately the number one seed was not ready to be dethroned and 14 Black went down to defeat, 15-13.

14 Black finished the opening round of pool play with a 4-1 record, finishing second, advancing to Saturday’s second round three team pool still alive in the Gold Division. Their first match on Saturday was against the MadFrogs 14 National PC. The Frogs were coming off of three straight losses, and had their backs against the wall when they stepped on the court to play 14 Black. The Frogs took the first set 25-16 and came back and won the match with a second set 29-27 victory. Now 14 Black had their backs against the wall having to beat their next opponent, Colorado Jrs14 Fiene, or face falling into the silver division or lower. 14 Black took the first set 25-22 and took the match with a gutsy second set come from behind 28-26 victory. The three team pool had ended with all three teams having identical 1-1 records. In the end, Colorado Jrs. was awarded first place and 14 Black and MadFrogs had a one set playoff to 25 with the winner taking second place and a berth in the Gold Challenge Matches. The playoff remained tight until a string of 8 straight points took the score from 14-13 to 22-13. The playoff was won by 14 Black, 25-14. With that win, 14 Black had secured no worse than a top 16 finish in the tournament.

Saturday play ended with a challenge match that would be a rematch with Colorado Performance. This time the team from Colorado would not be ambushed by the upstart 14 Black team from Kansas. The first set was won handily by Performance, 25-13. 14 Black fought back in the second set, overcoming a 2-5 deficit to take a 14-11 lead. But in the end Performance proved too much for the scrappy 14 Black, taking a 25-18 win in the second set, putting 14 Black into the Silver playoffs on Sunday.

Sunday’s opening match was against Ultimate G14 Gold, a team that 14 Black had lost to at the Mid-East Qualifier in St Louis back in March. 14 Black was determined to not have this match end in the same result, and they jumped out of the gate with a resounding 25-14 first set win. However, Ultimate was not through, bouncing back with a 25-11 thumping of their own. This set up a decisive third set that 14 Black came back from the dead to win 15-11 to advance to the semifinals of the Silver Division.

14 Black’s Cinderella season came to an end with their match against OJVA 14 Gold out of Portland, Oregon. After losing the first set, 17-25, 14 Black fought back to win the second 25-23. In that second set they trailed 18-23, but reeled off 7 straight points to force the third set. Unfortunately, in the end, they came up on the short end of a 15-10 score. The season was over, but the memories of a great run at Nationals will forever be etched in the minds of the plucky girls of Team Dynasty 14 Black.
